Effective Surveillance

Being one of the most tech-savvy cities in India, Chennai uses some of the latest technology to catch traffic rule offenders on a daily basis. While some cities still rely on traffic policemen to catch perpetrators, Chennai uses high-tech CCTVs to record anyone breaking the law. The government and the Traffic Police have installed thousands of cameras across the city to ensure that every offence is recorded and penalized in the right way. Chennai uses both CCTV cameras as well as ANPR or Automated Number Plate Recognition cameras to monitor the roads and traffic. The police have installed these cameras on the most congested and most-used roads in the city as well as the smaller streets to ensure that every offence is recorded and fined accordingly.

What is an e-Challan and how it works?

When the e-Challan was first used in 2013, most people didn’t know what to think about it. It seemed complicated to those who were not familiar with using the latest technology but for those who were, it was a brilliant implementation. It works by combining state-of-the-art technology and the Traffic Police of the city services. The ANPR camera records a violation and then send a screen grab to the closest police control room. A computer in the control room then prepares a receipt with all the details of the violation. The receipt also has a bar code and a payment link which can be used for instant payment. All the servers in the control rooms have access to RTO and NIC servers and can therefore get information for all the offenders. The receipt will then be sent to the mobile number registered with these servers. An offender can make the payment for the e-Challan through the link sent on their mobile, through the Post Office, or through any of the websites that allow payments for e-Challans.
